Position Summary: The Assistant General Counsel position in the General Counsel's Office at A Mutual Insurance Company, providing legal services to A Mutual Insurance Company and its affiliates. The Assistant General Counsel reports to the General Counsel and provides various legal services in a variety of roles including coverage, claims, underwriting, risk management, corporate, regulatory, and filings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support third-party liability and first party property coverage actions by handling declaratory judgment coverage litigation, drafting and researching coverage positions, and supervising outside coverage counsel in collaboration with claims.
  • Directly handle motions and appeals including the drafting of motions and briefs and oral argument on behalf of A Mutual Insurance Company and its insureds at the state appellate divisions and federal courts. Oversee and manage outside appellate counsel. Appear for CAMP conferences and other settlement/mediation conferences.
  • Provide regulatory support to the company by responding to and liaising with regulatory authorities in various states and supporting corporate filings with various insurance departments.
  • Provide general contractual legal support for the company's contracts with vendors and assist A Mutual Insurance Company insured's and brokers with the review and drafting of vendor/contractor agreements with a primary focus on insurance procurement and risk transfer.
  • Provide underwriting support including drafting manuscript endorsements and other policy language.
  • Work collaboratively across the company and within General Counsel's office.
  • Participates in Special Projects and Performs Additional Duties as Required by General Counsel.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
  • Law School Degree required.
  • JD and bar admission in New York, and the Southern and Eastern Federal District Courts required. NJ admission is a plus.
  • Minimum 8 years insurance and litigation experience in matters including coverage litigation, appeals, and/or insurance regulatory compliance at a firm and/or in-house required.
  • Experience in legal writing and review of motions, appeals, briefs, and other litigation and appellate filings required.
  • Experience in legal research in insurance and corporate matters required.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office 365 required.
