Description:

We are seeking a dynamic individual to serve as Assistant General Counsel at A Performing Arts & Nonprofit Organization. The Assistant GC will serve as a corporate generalist, bringing specialized knowledge in copyright and other intellectual property matters to A Performing Arts & Nonprofit Organization. In this role, they will provide legal guidance across a spectrum of areas, including contracts, intellectual property, tax, and more. Collaboration will be key, as they work closely with the General Counsel, senior management, outside legal counsel, and employees at all levels of the organization.

Tasks & Responsibilities:
  • Review, draft and negotiate, and support colleagues in the negotiation, of a high volume of agreements (including, for example, agreements relating to artistic programming, educational projects, media and digital initiatives, hall and event space rentals, grants and funding, consultant engagements, employment contracts, and real estate transactions)
  • Oversee A Performing Arts & Nonprofit Organization's intellectual property portfolio, including trademark registrations and managing infringement situations
  • Offer guidance on structuring new initiatives, with a focus on intellectual property considerations
  • Assist in developing and refining contract templates, procedures, and organizational policies
  • Conduct and assist in staff training on contract templates, policies, and other legal matters
  • Manage relationships with pro bono and external attorneys
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills & Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate degree (or equivalent) and admission to the New York State bar
  • Minimum of 4 years of legal experience post-degree
  • Strong academic credentials
  • Intellectual property expertise, including copyright, with music and performing arts expertise strongly preferred;
  • Large law firm experience, strongly preferred
  • Exceptional contract drafting, review, and negotiation skills, including complex agreements and business transactions
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with proficient project management capabilities
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects across diverse legal subject areas
  • Ability to train colleagues on organizational policies and procedures
  • Comfortable interacting with senior management, external counsel, board members, government representatives, and the public
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and legal acumen to be a trusted resource for staff at all levels of the organization
