Description:

The Opportunity:
We are seeking a Labor and Employment Counsel in CA to join our specialized national portfolio/large client team. This Counsel role is a substantially reduced-schedule and salaried position designed to be flexible on location, and is fully remote with access to any of our local offices as needed. As a firm that values and recognizes that legal practice is not a “one-size-fits all” profession, Seyfarth was a frontrunner in offering remote and flexible work arrangements. This counsel position is and will remain fully remote. Moreover, this is an exceptional and rare opportunity for experienced lawyers who do not seek to be in a partner-track position due to the additional nonbillable commitments of those roles, but who want to continue to do sophisticated legal work with direct client involvement, all while working with the best employment team in the country!

Candidates must be very comfortable handling single-plaintiff employment lawsuits from start through the summary judgment phase with minimal oversight. In this role, Counsel will routinely interface directly with clients and Firm partners, as well as provide litigation recommendations and develop defense strategy.

A Counsel will be dedicated to a somewhat limited number of client portfolios of employment work, such that the lawyer will become immersed in the business needs of a particular industry or industries and will be able to develop a deep knowledge of a client's preferences. The Counsel will be responsible for handling and litigating such clients' portfolios within a particular geographic region, in addition to working directly with the relevant relationship partners to foster a stronger client relationship.

The Day-To-Day:
A Counsel in this role is responsible for leading and managing single-plaintiff cases and administrative charges. Lawyers in this role will handle matters in federal and state courts, and before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and perhaps the Department of Labor, as well as other federal, state, and local administrative agencies. They must be able to directly run all aspects of single-plaintiff litigation, including drafting responsive pleadings, handling all aspects of the discovery process (including taking and defending depositions), drafting motions and briefs, including motions for summary judgment, and occasionally attending and handling arbitration. Additionally, they will work on EEOC Charges, including defending investigations, preparing position statements, defending clients in fact-finding conferences and on-site visits, representing clients in mediations and conciliations, and negotiating settlements. Occasional travel, primarily within CA, may be required.

You Have:
  • 7+ years of increasingly responsible employment law experience, preferably on the defense side.
  • Experience handling a single-plaintiff employment lawsuit from start to finish with minimal oversight.
  • Top law firm experience.
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Stellar analytical skills; and strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Admission to the California state bar.
