What You'll Do:
Become part of an iconic brand that is set to revolutionize the all-electric pick-up truck & rugged SUV marketplace by achieving the following:
  • Serve as trusted counsel on labor and employment law matters, including those under state and federal laws governing EEO, wage & hour, leave of absence, retaliation and whistleblower, and other labor and employment law matters.
  • Provide guidance and support to management and the People Team on employee relations matters, including disciplinary actions, leaves of absence, and performance management.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to educate managers and employees on various labor and employment laws and regulations, policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Stay abreast of changes in labor and employment laws, regulations, industry trends and best practices. Proactively assess the impact of these changes on the organization's labor and employee relations strategies and recommend necessary adjustments.
  • Review and respond to labor and employment related claims, including employment charges, complaints, and attorney demand letters; develop a strategy to address such claims, draft responses to charges and attorney demand letters; review and approve court filings.
  • Manage and supervise outside counsel, experts and vendors in general legal counseling, litigation claims, and other disputes, the budgeting and invoice review for these matters, and evaluate the performance of outside counsel.
  • Draft policies, handbooks, agreements and position statements, and implement controls throughout the organization with respect thereto.
  • Manage and coordinate discovery, including litigation holds, information gathering, e-discovery, documents collection, witness preparation, depositions, and privilege reviews for employment matters, including responding to information requests.
  • Work with investigative teams to ensure thorough and complete privileged investigations of employment related matters, and provide legal advice related to such investigations.

Location & Travel Expectations: The responsibilities of this role require attendance in-office at our Columbia office on a hybrid schedule, at in-person meetings and occasionally at events. Applicants should expect that the role may require the ability to convene with An American Automotive Company colleagues in person and be able to travel to other An American Automotive Company offices or other locations to participate in matters, meetings and events on behalf of the company.

  • At least 7 years of experience in labor and employment law; in-house experience preferred
  • Experience defending employment and labor law actions, including familiarity with the EEOC, FMLA, ADA, DOL, FLSA, and the NLRA
  • J.D. degree from an ABA-approved law school and be an active member in good standing of the Bar (South Carolina or Michigan preferred)
  • Demonstrated track record of working with, influencing, and providing counsel to executives and members of senior management team
  • Strategic thinking with the capacity to make sound decisions and give business and legal advice, at times in a compressed time frame with limited formation
  • Ability to set priorities and effectively, efficiently, and calmly manage multiple time-sensitive projects
  • Practical and business-minded with an ability to present advice pragmatically
  • Ability to work independently and cross-functionally across multiple responsibilities and functions simultaneously in a fast-paced, ever-changing and challenging environment
  • Achieves success through change: identifies opportunities for improvement and innovation, removes barriers and resistance, and enables behaviors that support desired outcomes
  • Understands the company's short and long-term priorities and aligns individual priorities and behavior around achievement of those objectives
