Position Summary:
IRLI is seeking Staff Counsel. The individual in this position, under the supervision of the Director of Litigation, will manage his or her own caseload and all aspects of litigation and pre-litigation demands, including the development of case strategy/assessment, discovery, document preservation and collection, drafting, and editing of pleadings and briefs, preparing witnesses for interviews, depositions, and trial, attending hearings, mediations, court conferences and trials, and appellate briefing and argument, as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • J.D. Degree and admitted to the District of Columbia Bar (or eligible to waive into the same)
  • While litigation experience is preferred, exemplary recent law school graduates looking for a rewarding first job where they make a difference, learn litigation skills immediately and benefit from mentorship are encouraged to apply
  • Motivated self-starter who can work independently as well as with others
  • Possess superb interpersonal, writing, and oral communication skills
  • Ability to analyze and resolve novel, complex issues with a resourceful, “can-do” attitude
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, take on new responsibilities and prioritize work in a dynamic, deadline-intensive environment
  • Experience with immigration and/or constitutional law is a strong positive, though not mandatory
  • Government relations experience or service for federal or state government can be a positive
  • Commitment to excellence
