Job Overview:
An American Technology Company is seeking an Assistant General Counsel, Data Privacy/Data Privacy Specialist with strong data privacy and security compliance experience in a corporate setting. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, the Assistant General Counsel, Data Privacy/Data Privacy Specialist will be a key member of An American Technology Company's Legal team and support activities related to the development, implementation and maintenance of An American Technology Company's privacy program.

In this role you will have the opportunity to work with a dynamic and experienced team on privacy issues impacting An American Technology Company's products and services in support of millions of students and educators worldwide. You will work directly with business and engineering teams to design innovative privacy solutions for our services as well as across the legal department on An American Technology Company activities and regulatory issues.

Job Responsibilities:
  • You will be responsible for advising and providing support on privacy related aspects for An American Technology Company's various products and services and working alongside legal, engineering and business teams.
  • Deep understanding of general privacy laws, regulations, requirements and industry best practices.
  • Advising the business on legal, regulatory, and business standards.
  • Supporting and monitoring a privacy program, as needed, to ensure that technology and business processes meet applicable legal requirements.
  • Coordinating internal and external investigations, compliance reviews and monitoring activities.
  • Identifying and communicating potential risks areas with leadership.
  • Staying informed of and properly communicating any changes to or developments in privacy laws, regulations, standards, and guidance.

Job Requirements:
  • Knowledge of comprehensive privacy laws, and regulatory and other guidance and standards
  • Understanding of US state and federal sector-specific privacy laws, particularly as they relate to education
  • Ability to clearly organize and inform through excellent written and verbal communications
  • Ability to lead, take action, and provide direction in the face of ambiguity
  • Experience quickly issue-spotting, analyzing, and clearly communicating privacy advice on complex legal issues
  • Experience drafting and negotiating privacy related contracts
  • Experience conducting ongoing compliance monitoring activities in coordination with other compliance and operational assessment functions
  • Ability to get results in diverse, fast paced environments
  • Strong analytical capability with attention to detail
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and diplomacy
  • Ability to partner at all levels of the organization
  • Excellent academic credentials
  • 6-10 years privacy experience as an associate at a premier law firm or business. In-house experience a plus but not essential.
