The Role:

In this vital role, you will join our dedicated team tasked with maximizing the value and potential of An American Biotechnology Company's intellectual property. As Associate Counsel, Intellectual Property, you will oversee the operational aspects of our patent practice, ensuring efficient and consistent strategic implementation, as well as detailed analyses to inform strategic thinking. Your expertise will support our intellectual property team's commitment to the An American Biotechnology Company Mindsets while also contributing to a culture of excellence that is critical to our mission to deliver transformative mRNA medicines to people.

Responsibilities:
  • Execute strategy with urgency and precision: Direct the operational management of An American Biotechnology Company's patent portfolio, collaborating with scientists and senior attorneys to collect, analyze and organize technical information to optimize patent preparation and implement prosecution strategies.
  • Remove viscosity in operations and communication: Support a team of experienced IP professionals by analyzing relevant information and competitive intelligence to assess third party patent rights, develop mitigation strategies, and assist in the development of patent enforcement strategies.
  • Navigate complex legal landscapes: Coordinate internal and external legal counsel by aligning legal positions taken in prosecution and contested matters.
  • Innovate and digitize processes: Create and implement AI solutions to enhance the efficiency of in-house patent practices.

Basic Qualifications:
  • JD required, with admission to practice law in at least one jurisdiction; preference given to those admitted in Massachusetts or with European Patent Office (EPO) qualifications. Patent Agents with equivalent experience are also encouraged to apply.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a patent law environment, ideally with in-house experience in biotechnology.
  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences; Advanced degree or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Demonstrable experience in patent strategy, preparation, prosecution, and legal analysis of validity and infringement issues.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, ability to work with various technologies and stakeholders to implement complex IP initiatives.

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience utilizing AI for predictive analytics and implementing AI-driven enhancements in patent prosecution and strategic planning.
  • Experience working in-house within a biotechnology or pharmaceutical environment.
