The Opportunity:
The Counsel position is responsible for providing legal advice on life, annuities, retirement and protection insurance products, including working with a team on SEC filings and exemptions from SEC filings, reviewing insurance and distribution contracts as well as client communications and marketing materials. The position is part of a team that supports two major lines of A Life Insurance Company's U.S. business. This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience with the regulation of individual and retirement insurance products and join a team that supports A Life Insurance Company's vision while providing quality service to our customers and overseeing compliance with insurance law and securities law requirements.

Success in this role requires a strong desire to develop subject matter expertise in both insurance and securities law as it relates to A Life Insurance Company's retail and retirement business.

Good interpersonal and communication skills are important factors. The Counsel position supports a team that is responsible for maintaining, updating and creating active SEC Form N-4, N-6, Form D filings and private placement memoranda as well as providing ongoing advice to our business partners on current and new initiatives and projects. You'll be given the opportunity to learn dynamic areas of A Life Insurance Company's business and collaborate closely with senior members of the law department and business counterparts in an environment where every contribution is respected, and every perspective is heard.

How You'll Help Us Build a Confident Future (Key Responsibilities)
  • Update and maintain SEC product registrations for variable universal life insurance and variable annuities. Provide advice regarding funding agreements as well as Corporate and Bank owned life insurance products.
  • Provide creative and contemporary advice on legal issues relating to annuity, life, funding agreements, Corporate and Bank owned variable life insurance products and LTC products.
  • Review marketing materials and agreements

What You Need to Succeed (Required Qualifications)
  • Law degree (J.D. or equivalent) and bar admission.
  • Work in a team environment with a desire to gain experience handling complex legal matters while recognizing matters that require escalation in a timely fashion.
  • Sound judgement, a high degree of professionalism, and an ability to prioritize and adhere to deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and persuasively with a variety of internal stakeholders (corporate business partners, team members, functional colleagues, etc.)
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build effective partnerships.
  • Familiarity with life insurance and annuity insurance law and SEC product registration requirements, with a focus on insurance products (SEC forms N-4; N-6 and Form D) is a plus.

What Can Give You an Edge (Additional Skills)
  • Three to Five years of legal experience, preferably with a record of in-house insurance industry success.
