Primary Responsibilities:
  • Represent clients in family law matters including issues involving divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, property division, and adoption.
  • Provide legal counsel and advice to clients regarding their rights and obligations under Iowa law.
  • Working collaboratively as part of a larger team of family law attorneys.
  • Manage a caseload of family law matters, ensuring timely progress and resolution of cases.
  • Draft, review, and file necessary legal documents such as petitions, motions, affidavits, orders, stipulations and agreements.
  • Appear in court for contested hearings, trials, and mediations.
  • Engage in negotiation and mediation efforts to resolve disputes amicably and efficiently.
  • Develop settlement strategies and negotiate terms with opposing counsel.
  • Conduct legal research on relevant family law issues and stay updated on changes in Iowa law..
  • Prepare legal briefs, memoranda, and other documents to support case arguments and strategies.
  • Prepare and present arguments and evidence in support of clients' positions.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients, keeping them informed of case developments and answering their questions.
  • Provide compassionate and empathetic support to clients dealing with emotional and sensitive issues.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of client relationships.
  • Participate in networking events, community outreach, and other business development activities to promote the firm's family law practice.
  • Supervising paralegals, staff, and team members as your role progresses.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate complex matters concisely and effectively in oral and written form.
  • Excellent interpersonal and client service skills, organizational skills, attention to detail and time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to advocate for clients in a Courtroom setting.
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate and to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

Required Education and Experience:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active member in good standing of the Bar or currently eligible to become licensed, to practice law in Iowa. South Dakota and Nebraska licensure is helpful.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Experience:
  • 7-10+ years of specific experience handling Iowa family law matters
  • First chair trial experience.
  • Excellent academic and professional credentials.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
