Summary:
This is an onsite position located in Champaign, IL

The In-House Legal Counsel is responsible for the management of the contracting process with our multi-family clients, advising senior members of our management team on other corporate legal matters, other projects as needed and assigned by the company.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the acquisition of permits and licenses required for various projects and activities, including but not limited to construction permits, environmental permits, business licenses, and zoning permits.
  • Draft, review, and analyze board materials, resolutions, bylaws, and corporate policies to ensure compliance with legal requirements and best practices.
  • Attend board meetings, committee meetings, and shareholder meetings as needed to provide legal advice and facilitate effective decision-making processes.
  • Negotiating, writing, and executing agreements and contracts on behalf of the company.
  • Advising on contract status, legal risks, and legal liabilities associated with corporate transactions.
  • Managing and mitigating legal risks by designing and implementing company policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with all laws and regulations that apply to the business.
  • Promoting legal, compliance, and risk management best practice throughout the company.
  • Communicating with and managing any third-party bodies such as external counsel or auditors.
  • Staying up to date with changes to legislation, particularly in relation to laws, rules and regulations that directly affect your business and specific industry.
  • Liaising with senior members of staff.
  • Working alongside other departments within the company.
  • Providing training to the company on legal topics.

Qualifications:
  • JD from an accredited law school
  • Bar membership in good standing
  • Five (5) + years of experience gained in a large law firm and/or in-house with major firm preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong negotiating skills with both legal and financial/commercial issues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships within the organization's legal department and across all businesses.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Strong capacity for leadership.
  • Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office products and CRM.
