A Top Rated Employment Law Firm is seeking a Matter Management and Conflicts Attorney to support the Firm's critical risk-management functions by performing duties associated with opening and closing matters—including analysis and resolution of potential business and legal conflicts—and otherwise contributing to a diverse range of functions as a member of the Firm's Finance and Accounting team, reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer and working closely with the Firm's Chief Operating Officer and Office of the General Counsel, with significant room to take initiative and play an impactful role. The successful candidate will be based in either our New York or Washington DC office.

Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the provision of timely and effective conflicts services, overseeing all aspects of the Firm's conflicts review and clearance processes, including the identification and resolution of conflicts of interest associated with both the pursuit of new firm business opportunities and the hiring of attorney and staff candidates, by:analyzing conflicts reports to determine whether conflicts of interest may exist, and generating the underlying reports and conducting conflicts-related research (including utilizing external databases and resources, e.g., to determine ownership structure) as required;liaising with attorneys on conflicts issues, including investigating, identifying, and recommending resolution of any conflicts of interest that may arise;consulting with the Office of the General Counsel and firm management on complex conflicts issues and implementing and maintaining ethical walls where necessary;routinely maintaining the client and matter information contained in the Firm's conflicts-related databases, including updating entries and creating new client-matter codes as needed; andtraining attorneys and relevant staff on the Firm's business intake and conflicts-clearance processes (in conjunction with the Office of the General Counsel, Case Development Senior Manager, and others on the Business Intake Team) and playing a critical role in ensuring the standardization and integrity of data and information gathering during the new business intake process.
  • Process and maintain compliance documentation—including client engagement agreements and, where applicable, conflict waivers, billing guidelines, and third-party payor agreement —for all Firm matters; ensure that these agreements are fully executed, approved by the Office of the General Counsel where necessary, and saved appropriately in the Firm's document management system.
  • Conduct a regular audit of all open matters to ensure that matters are still active, ensuring closure if not, and are classified appropriately (e.g., as hourly or contingency).
  • Oversee the Firm's overall matter-closing process with a focus on ensuring that matters are closed across different departments and within the various systems used by Attorneys and the Finance, Litigation Operations, and Records teams; that disengagement letters are sent to clients in a timely manner; that any outstanding balance due is addressed by the relevant attorneys and Finance team, and that any remaining retainer funds are returned; and that updates are made within the Firm's Accounting and Finance system to ensure that the matter is properly documented for reporting purposes.
  • Stay abreast of new technologies, trends, and changes in ethical requirements impacting matter opening and closing (including but not limited to conflicts of interest) in the varying jurisdictions in which the Firm operates; identify potential areas of improvement within the Firm's matter opening and closing processes (e.g., implementing better use of technology); develop and maintain related internal procedural documentation; and proactively assume other duties as necessary.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a combination of employment, educational, and life experience that demonstrates the qualities and skills below:
  • Education and Experience: You have both Bachelor's and Juris Doctor (JD) degrees, a minimum of 5 years of experience resolving conflicts, and experience with matter-intake, accounting, and/or conflict-checking systems in a law firm environment. Must have demonstrated advanced knowledge of legal ethics and conflicts rules, as well as the practices and procedures associated with business intake and the hiring of firm lawyers and staff, including familiarity with web-based research and the use of external databases such as Hoovers, Dunn & Bradstreet, or Capital IQ. Strong functional skills in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Microsoft Explorer, and Outlook) also required.

Compensation: An attractive compensation package (tailored to experience), with a target base compensation range of $175,000 to $230,000 per year (exempt).
