Primary Purpose:
An Utility Company is seeking an attorney to handle a wide range of regulatory proceedings for the Company in a lead counsel capacity. This position will primarily focus on regulatory matters at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), as well as California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Act as lead counsel for a wide range of federal and state regulatory proceedings for An Utility Company
  • Handle fast-paced proceedings and matters and provide timely advice and counsel to internal clients, particularly the Gas Acquisition department, and the law department.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel for highly complex, technical, and/or sensitive issues to the business unit or other client groups as necessary.
  • Interact regularly with internal clients and understand the goals and sensitivities of the business unit.
  • Ensure that law department management and/or business unit leadership stays regularly informed regarding proceedings.
  • Position is based in downtown Los Angeles.

Qualifications:
Education:
JD (Juris Doctor). Graduate from a nationally recognized law school. Top academic credentials desired.

Experience:
8+ years' experience required in litigation, preferably before different adjudicatory bodies, including court, arbitration and/or proceedings handled by administrative law judges. FERC regulatory law experience required. Trial experience is highly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Deep knowledge of the FERC-regulated utility industry, particularly for natural gas pipelines, and in areas focused on gas market and trading expertise and FERC gas ratemaking. Knowledge of affiliate compliance, and regulatory accounting and finance are also desirable.
  • Ability to represent An Utility Company as the lead lawyer in regulatory proceedings, such as independently handle regulatory proceedings before federal and state regulatory agencies.
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy and communication skills and strong analytic ability
  • Ability to quickly learn and ability to apply regulatory knowledge to various legal situations affecting the Business Unit.
  • Excellent judgment and willingness to learn, accept new challenges, and work on a team.

Other Qualifications:
  • Some in and out-of-state travel required (primarily to San Francisco and DC).
  • Admission to the California Bar and/or the DC Bar highly preferred. Attorneys licensed in a state outside California may apply, subject to registering as an in-house attorney in accordance with the California Supreme Court and State Bar rules if hired. Required to be a member in good standing.
