The Council brings together individuals adept at solving problems and employs four coordinated approaches to advance change—litigation, research, legislative and administrative advocacy, and communications.

Position Summary:
The Senior Managing Attorney provides mentorship, training, and technical assistance to Immigration Justice Campaign volunteers working on pro bono cases and/or private attorneys working on federally funded casework and supervises other technical assistance attorneys and contract mentoring attorneys, as needed.

This position reports to the Immigration Justice Campaign Director and helps the Director achieve organizational and Campaign objectives, strategies, policies, and tactics. Big-picture thinking and adaptability, strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and personal and professional judgment are necessary for this role.

As with all positions at the Council, this position requires commitment to the Council's mission and the organization's culture of philanthropy.

This role is contingent upon grant funding.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Manages the workload of the technical assistance attorneys and any contractor attorneys as needed.
  • Oversees the development and maintenance of all training materials, collaborates with case placement staff to ensure up-to-date, accurate information is provided to all attorneys for whom we are providing technical assistance.
  • Provides practice and legal strategy assistance, and develops technical assistance plans for attorneys of varying levels of experience.
  • Monitors cases for quality assurance.
  • Manages the review of referrals to ensure suitability for placement.
  • Collaborates with developing new partnerships with legal service organizations and new types of volunteer opportunities for Campaign volunteers.
  • Engages with the IJC Director in long-term planning to further the Campaign's overall goals.

Requirements:
  • Juris Doctor
  • 7+ (seven plus) years relevant immigration law experience and/or sufficient relevant work experience required.
  • Significant experience and expertise in the following areas: affirmative and defensive asylum, representing unaccompanied minors, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, complex removal cases including cancellation of removal, and adjustment of status.
  • Experience mentoring pro bono volunteers preferred.
  • This position includes supervisory responsibilities and is accountable for total performance management, including selection, termination, performance reviews, salary administration and career development of the following position(s): Any technical assistance attorneys, staff attorneys, or contract attorneys designated to the IJC.
