A Not-For-Profit Professional Membership Association is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic attorney to fill the role of Settlement Conference Coordinator in our Mortgage Foreclosure Assistance Project.

A Not-For-Profit Professional Membership Association operates the Mortgage Foreclosure Assistance Project under the New York State Office of the Attorney General's Homeowner Protection Program (HOPP). Now entering its thirteenth year, the HOPP network continues to work zealously to ensure that no homeowner is without competent and free representation to assist them in the foreclosure process.

The Project serves a unique role of providing limited, for-the-day representation to homeowners in Nassau Supreme Court in Mineola, NY, as well as providing general foreclosure and court procedure information to walk-in, telephone, and email clients. The Project also holds regular legal consultation clinics and community programming throughout Nassau County.

Responsibilities of the Settlement Conference Coordinator include, but are not limited to:
  • Staff daily the Project table at the Nassau Supreme Court in Mineola
  • Represent for the day homeowners/pro se defendants for mortgage foreclosure and residential tax lien at settlement conference
  • Counsel walk-in clients and provide foreclosure resources and referrals for further assistance; educate clients regarding the foreclosure and court processes
  • Serve as the liaison between the Project Director, court staff and HOPP advocates
  • Work collaboratively with HOPP network legal service and housing counseling agencies at court appearances and after
  • Recruit and foster an active core of volunteer attorneys to help staff the daily court table and volunteer for legal consultation clinics and community programming
  • Oversee all volunteer scheduling for court appearances
  • Collaborate with Project staff on ideas for community programming and outreach efforts

Qualifications:
  • Admitted and in good standing to practice law in New York State
  • Experience in housing or related advocacy
  • An advocate for diverse clients; demonstrated commitment to access to justice
  • Professional, with outstanding court presence and demeanor
  • Strong time management skills; ability to be flexible and adaptable
  • Excellent writing and advocacy skills
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus
