Essential Functions:
A Legal Aid Office in Chicago, IL seeks a full-time Staff Attorney to immediately join our Family Security and Domestic Violence programs, which assist low-income, underrepresented individuals and families in the Chicagoland area by addressing the multifaceted legal hurdles that arise when a family is in crisis.

The Staff Attorneys will work with, and under the supervision of, the Managing Attorney of the Domestic Violence Program, to provide brief services and extended representation related to Orders of Protection and family law matters to clients. Clients may also receive legal assistance for a range of other legal issues as necessary to obtain long-term safety and stability.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Conduct trauma-informed interviews of potential clients, gathering information to assess their legal needs and evaluate cases for representation, providing legal advice and referrals when necessary.
  • Provide brief services or full representation to clients in divorce, parentage matters, and/or orders of protection cases, both at the Domestic Violence Courthouse and the Daley Center, located in downtown Chicago, Illinois.
  • Handle a case load of approximately 20-30 cases.
  • Maintain client files in accordance with GCLC protocols.
  • Provide accurate and complete information for reporting, including documenting services in the case record.

Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Active Illinois Bar License. Recent law school graduates who will be sitting for the July 2024 bar exam are encouraged to apply.
  • Relevant experience in public interest, family law, or domestic violence is preferred.
  • Must have completed or be willing to complete the 40-Hour Domestic Violence training within 12 weeks of employment.
  • Experience working with diverse individuals in a professional and empathetic manner.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Spanish language proficiency is highly preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and time management skills

License/Certification:
Illinois Bar License (Required)
