This position will serve as a lawyer reporting to the managing assistant general counsel in the commercial or regulatory group practice group. You will be working with business partners throughout the company to further key business strategies and projects that will include commercial, operational, and regulatory issues.

This position will serve as a legal advisor assisting the Company in complying with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations. You will also advocate for company positions, potentially representing the company in contested proceedings before regulatory agencies. The successful candidate will be joining a practice group and legal department that prizes and fosters a culture of collaboration, creative problem-solving, and results.

A Public Utility Company supports career progression, and this role will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidate's applicable skills and experience at either the Assistant General Counsel I or II levels.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provides legal counsel on state and federal regulatory issues ensuring company's interests are effectively represented by developing and recommending company positions on legal issues to further the company's legal interests and mitigate potential legal risk.
  • Provides commercial, regulatory, and compliance legal support for power operations (energy trading).
  • Identifies and assesses legal, business and regulatory risks and offers steps to comply and mitigate risk.
  • Prepares and reviews written legal contracts, documents and provides legal analyses, interpretations and recommendations in compliance with policies and laws.
  • Identifies and implements process improvements and efficiencies within the Legal department. Contributes to the overall strategy and goals of specific business partners, the practice group, and department as a whole.
  • Represents and advocates for PGE's interests to governmental agencies, counter parties and third parties.
  • Selects outside counsel as needed. Oversees outside counsel to ensure cost-effective and high-quality legal representation.

Education/Experience/Certifications
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are newer in career and possess 2-5 years of experience.
  • Requires a Juris Doctor degree.
  • Typically three - seven years practicing (in private practice, in-house, or government) in connection with commercial, state regulatory or FERC matters.
  • Admitted to Oregon State Bar (or able to be admitted within 6 months of employment)
