A Non-Profit Environmental Public Interest Law Firm has a new Associate Attorney position to focus on federal energy work. This Associate will join our Energy Program and work closely with SELC's Senior Attorney for transmission and wholesale electricity market matters. This role expands SELC's capacity to address emerging transmission and wholesale electricity market issues before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and state utility commissions across SELC's footprint. The Associate Attorney position is open to recent law school graduates, attorneys completing clerkships, and practicing attorneys. The term for an associate position is three years, with the potential for an additional three-year term. SELC has a hybrid work model that offers employees the flexibility to work remotely up to two days per week. This is a full-time, exempt position and all employees must reside in our region. Relocation reimbursement is available to those relocating for an SELC position.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with SELC's senior transmission and wholesale electricity markets attorney in representing clients and partners before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and Department of Energy.?
  • Advise and assist state-level attorneys on transmission and wholesale electricity market issues emerging in the state utility commissions.??
  • Engage in legal and policy research, analysis, and advocacy in various settings, including federal and state judicial, regulatory and legislative forums.?
  • Provide diligent and professional support to each matter assigned, produce high quality work product and work independently to implement program and office work plans.??
  • Meet internal and external deadlines and communicate regularly with supervisors and colleagues about the status of projects. This includes demonstrating excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational abilities.??
  • Contribute to litigation teams by conducting legal research, drafting briefs and pleadings, preparing witnesses, developing factual records, conducting and responding to discovery, and coordinating with clients and counsel.??
  • Advocate in administrative proceedings by researching and drafting comments, coordinating coalition partners and speaking at public meetings.??
  • Cultivate strong relationships with SELC's clients, partners and external stakeholders.??
  • Take on progressively more substantial responsibility, invest in professional development and seek out opportunities for practice experience across SELC's advocacy tools including litigation, lobbying, administrative advocacy, press, coalition management and public communications.??
  • Take initiative by looking beyond specific assignments to contribute original insight and strategies to support the project, the office, the program and SELC's mission.??

Required Qualifications:
  • Strong academic background and personal commitment to SELC's mission.?
  • 0-3 years of post-law school professional experience.?
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a diverse set of clients and partners.?
  • A strong work ethic and sense of initiative, with demonstrated ability to meet internal and external deadlines and support SELC's collegial and collaborative approach in all interactions.?
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to translate technical and legal issues into plain English.?
  • A genuine interest in and commitment to helping SELC create and foster a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace. You engage in ongoing personal learning and are eager to contribute to our organizational efforts in this area.?

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience or education in energy law & policy and utility regulation.?
  • Oral advocacy experience and comfort speaking in varied settings, legal and non-legal alike.?
