Description:

Under the direction of Senior Vice President, Associate General Counsel, the VP, Assistant General Counsel will provide pragmatic legal advice and counsel to Human Resources partners and other corporate departments.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide day-to-day counseling on employment matters to Human Resources partners.
  • Advise Human Resources and business partners on employee matters such as terminations, restructurings, lay-offs, discipline, leaves of absence and accommodations as well as compliance with applicable federal and state employment statutes.
  • Handle administrative matters at federal and state agencies such as the EEOC, or California DFEH or DLSE; oversee outside counsel handling employment litigation.
  • Draft and advise on employment related documents such as offer letters, employment agreements, incentive compensation plans, retention agreements, and separation agreements.
  • Remain informed and update Human Resources partners on legal, regulatory and other developments in the employment law arena; anticipate their potential impact on the company's operations and strategy; and provide counsel to business and human resources to effectively manage these issues.
  • Draft and update Human Resources policies to comply with applicable laws and reflect legal developments.

Requirements:
  • JD from a nationally recognized law school and an active bar license.
  • Minimum six years of experience focused on employment law, with strong preference for experience in the financial services industry.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects and manage deadlines in a fast-paced and demanding work environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to interact well with business executives and provide pragmatic advice that balances business needs and legal risk.
  • Combination of both law firm and in-house experience is preferred but open to considering lawyers solely with large law firm experience.
