About the role:
In this challenging and dynamic role, you will report to the Head of Labor & Employment Legal and support the fast-growing An Insurance Company business units and functions. This position requires a high degree of independent analysis, judgment, and the ability to provide clear, business-minded advice and counsel to internal clients in Human Resources (HR) as well as Business and Functional partners. You will also be required to oversee and efficiently manage outside counsel as needed.

This position is a hybrid role that will be based in Houston, TX.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Provide advice and counsel on a broad spectrum of labor and employment-related matters, including pre-hire assessments, background checks, investigations, leaves of absence, restrictive covenants, workforce restructurings and reductions in force.
  • Monitor leislative updates at federal, state, and local level across U.S.; ensure employment policies, training and practices are compliant with applicable laws and aligned to best practices.
  • Manage employment dispute matters, including independent handling of pre-litigation demands/settlements, mediations, and administrative charges; provide strategic oversight and management of external counsel in arbitration, agency, and court proceedings.
  • Draft and review employment agreements and incentive-based compensation plans/schedules.
  • Partner with compliance team in regulatory matters, including employee conduct issues and U5 reporting.
  • Support compliance reviews and audits in line with legal requirements and best practices.
  • Advise on compensation matters, including wage and hour practices, overtime issues and administration of incentive compensation and commission programs/plans.
  • Additional support on L&E and related matters as needed.
  • You will also be able to participate in the An Insurance Company award-winning pro bono program.

Qualifications:
  • Law degree and 10+ years of employment law experience, preferably both at a law firm and in-house.
  • Subject matter expertise across a broad range of U.S. labor and employment laws.
  • Strong analytical skills, ability to identify multiple courses of action and make risk-based recommendations in the context of the broader organizational culture.
  • Experience reflective of ability to navigate governance structures and introduce/improve process.
  • Willingness to develop and adapt in role as needed in an evolving corporate environment.
  • Experience in insurance/financial services industry strongly preferred.
